The Canine Good Neighbour Test is Excellent Preparation for a Therapy Dog Test

The Therapy Dog 1 group class is ideal for handler-dog teams in the earlier stages of training to be a therapy dog. This class focuses on developing the skills needed to pass the 12-step Canine Good Neighbour Test. One objective of the Canadian Kennel Club Canine Good Neighbour Program is "To certify that dogs conduct themselves in a manner which is reliable and trustworthy in situations encountered in everyday living, be it around people, at home, in public, or in the presence of other dogs." As such, whether you plan to take the Canine Good Neighbour Test or not, training for it includes the basic skills needed to pass a Therapy Dog Test. However, it can be taken earlier when the dog is only 1-year old, and as many times as you need. Thus, it is an excellent first goal for "want-to-be" therapy dogs. Classes are a maximum of four handler-dog teams, thereby allowing personalized attention.
